How to Stop Checking- Part 2

Welcome! This is video 2 of a 3-part series on how to overcome OCD Checking.

The next video will be out on Thursday 19th October…be sure to check back. Enjoy…

So What Did You Think? Here’s a Quick Recap…

How to remember anything:

  1. Associate something you don’t know with something you do…through images.
  2. These images need to be vivid, unusual, bizarre and interactive.

When we use association with images in this way then we can’t help but remember. However, if these images aren’t unusual enough (too normal) then we won’t be able to remember what we want.

Filing Systems:

These are places in real life that we use to store what we want to remember. Two useful filing systems are actual locations (Loci) and even our own body (Body List.)

We can store what we want to remember on these places then refer to them at a later date when we want to refresh our memory.

All that’s required is a quick mental scan of those locations to remind ourselves of those unusual images we placed on them, (those images being the information we want to remember.)

How this Helps with OCD Checking

How about instead of placing random information on these locations (Loci)…why don’t we place unusual but yet relevant imagery on the things we check at the same time we’re actually checking it!

For instance, as we’re checking the oven why don’t we place the image of ice crusting over it. Ice is the code image to remind us that the oven is off. If the oven has ice on it then it must cold, if it’s cold then it must be off.

But there’s still a problem. The image of ice is back in the kitchen…so what happens when we leave our house?

This is where the Body List comes in.

As we place the image of ice on the oven we place our foot next to it so it becomes frozen solid too!

Then… when we leave our house and we start to worry about our oven being left on all we have to do is scan our frostbitten frozen foot then carry on with our day.

More about this in video 3…

So here’s your challenge today

So in your mind imagine two rooms in your house and visualize the first thing on your left and work your way around the room in a clockwise order picking out five locations.

Do this for two rooms so that you have ten Loci to place things you want to remember on.

Now write a list of ten random things and attach them to these locations using usual, interactive and bizarre imagery.

After a few reviews of this list eventually hide the written list away and refresh your memory purely through a mental scan of those rooms.

Then mention in the comments how many of those items you were able to remember

Don’t just read this…experience will blow your mind.

Thanks for watching and be aware that in the next video we’ll be doing a couple of practical examples so we can reblow our minds.

Secret Tip: Using the Look, Lock, Label & Leave System to remember what we’ve checked has been safely checked is far, far easier than the conventional uses of these memory systems.

Cya soon,

Chris.

ps So leave how many the of the ten items you remember without the written list and let me know how surprised you were by the results….another 1 to 10 score.

BTW here’s the link if you’re interested in getting stuck into the full course right now…cya soon!
