How to Stop Checking- Part 3

Welcome! This is video 3 of our 3-part series on how to overcome OCD Checking.

Here’s a quick Recap of those 2 Techniques:

Checking the Front Door

  1. Look– lock the door then gently pull the handle to confirm it’s locked. Continue to look at door handle/lock area until the rest of the steps are complete.
  2. Lock– place an image of a giant 3-foot long bolt lock onto the surface of the door. Notice it’s color, shape and whether it’s rusty or shiny.
  3. Label– now place the relevant image of a bolt of the bolt lock into a nostril. As it slips in feel the discomfort then wrap an imaginary bandage around it holding it in place. Continue to feel the bandage wrap around your entire head and face just leaving gaps for your nose, eyes and mouth.
  4. Leave– give the handle a final turn to reconfirm it’s locked then walk away.

Should you worry that you’ve accidentally left the door unlocked all you have to do is scan your head with your imagination and remember that bolt blocking your nostril and your mummification look!

We placed this imagery onto our body at the same time we physically checked the door. We always do this and this is referred to as ‘Labelling’ or ‘Synchronization.’

Checking the Coffee Maker

Note: This particular variation of this system only works for coffee makers with a removable jug, you can still apply this system to other types of coffee machines but that requires an alternate variation of this memory system.

  1. Look– if it’s possible to unplug the coffee maker and move it well away from any power source. Then remove jug (make sure that maker has no water inside…again this is covered in the full course) and place it away from the machine. Look only at real coffee maker until the rest of the steps are complete.
  2. Lock– as you’re looking at the real coffee jug imagine ice crusting over it until it is completely covered.
  3. Label– now imagine a replica of the jug is sitting on top of your head. Then place the coded image of ice on top of the jug and let it the ice work it’s way down to just above your eyebrows. 
  4. Leave– finish off by putting on a giant Mexican Sombrero or Ten Gallon Hat. Then stop looking at the jug and carry on with your day.

Now when you leave work and worry that you’ve left the coffee maker going all you have to do is remember the frozen coffee jug on your head and the giant Sombrero holding it in place.

Another thing to consider is that using the image of ice is not random. Ice is our code image for remembering that it’s off. If ice is on the jug then it must be cold…if it’s cold then it’s off.

We also synchronized this image as we were checking the real jug.

There you have it…

…that’s two examples of ‘The Look, Lock, Label and Leave System’.

Those two examples are yours to use!

I’ve used them consistently for several years. And they’ve knocked my OCD Checking each time with that four-punch combination.

However, there is so much more to learn. Certain techniques that can double the effectiveness of this system in seconds. Another technique that can quadruple it. Also, there’s one hack that everyone can do to help you create a laser-like focus.
